Interview With jitZul

You once said you ‘wanted to write more personal lyrics aiming to connect more directly with your live audience’. Why did you feel you had to accomplish this as a solo artist instead of in a group?

I think that the connection you have with the crowd when you're in a band - or the type of band that I was in anyway, is a bit different to the connection you feel when you're performing alone with an acoustic guitar. They're both equally viable, but in a rock band I think most of the time the crowd are feeding off the energy and rawness of the music and the kinetic force, as opposed to the intricacy of the lyrics. I've always been turned on by word play and storytelling, and when you're doing gigs where everything is turned up to 11 and the guitarist is turning his amp up to outdo the drummer and the bass player is turning his amp up to outdo both of them, the details in the lyrics tend to get lost somewhere along the way. People would come up to me after gigs and say "I loved that last song, haven't got a clue what you were singing about though", and to me that kinda defeated the purpose of spending so much time on lyrics and trying to relate with an audience in that way. The pen is mightier than the sword and all that.

As your popularity has grown do you feel any pressure to be a role model and act a certain way when it comes to your music?

Not really. I think people are exposed to so much these days in modern society that I don't really think there's much that I could teach them that's gonna lead them astray! I don't really believe in pressure anyway, it's just a state of mind. I've always adhered to just being yourself and what will be, will be.

One of your goals has been to move to the US permanently. What do you feel the US can offer your career vs. continuing in England?

Primarily I've always wanted to go to the states because personally, I just really like it there. I love the attitude and the spirit of people over there and I generally find most Americans to be very positive and optimistic, and I just find that really inspiring. Career-wise, the UK music scene is heavily centered around trends and fashion and wearing the right type of jeans, whereas I think that as the US is so big, good songs generally transcend all the little fads and trends and that’s mainly what people care about. That, and as well as wanting to embrace the whole spirit of The Beatles and stuff and not wanting to just be confined to our little green island. It's not just about the US though to be honest. I'm a creative person and I want to travel and see the world and if I can combine that with music then I'm a happy man.

Interview With Italian Fansite

1) What inspired your song "How to be"?

I was actually having a bit of writer's block at the time, and one day Rob Pattinson started telling me about a new movie that he was about to start shooting called How To Be. He told me it was about a young musician who was basically a bit of a failure with girls and in life in general. I thought it sounded really funny and I identified with it straight away and thought maybe I could write something for the soundtrack. So I went home and wrote it in a couple of days and gave it to Rob. Everyone really liked it but unfortunately it was too late to be used for the movie as the soundtrack had already been cut. I played it at a gig a few weeks later just for a bit of fun really and it got such a great response from the crowd i thought, actually.. I'll keep this song for myself!

2) If you can choose for which Rob's movie you would write a song? Why?
I have a new song called "Stay" which is probably the most romantic thing I've ever written. I've had quite a few emails from Twilight fans saying it would fit really well on the next Twilight movie... and I definitely wouldn't object if that were to happen!

3) What do you think about your song ‘Falling in love for the last time’ become a sort Rob & Kristen theme tune?
I think it's great! I'm just really pleased that so many people are being positive about the song and I'm very grateful that it has allowed my music to be heard by a much wider audience.

4)What are your future plans?

I've just started talks with Bobby Long's manager Phil Taylor at Up All Night Music Management about doing a 50 date tour of the USA from February until mid April next year. I think that America is such an important place within the music industry and the people there are always really positive and enthusiastic about music. I've been communicating with lots of fans over there already about touring there and they have already been really supportive, offering their help and wanting to be involved. I can't wait to get out there and repay them with some great gigs.

I'm also back in the studio next month with Stereophonics producer Jim Lowe to start work on some new recordings which will hopefully lead on to the making of my debut album.

5)When you came in Italy?
I'm really hoping that when I get back from the USA next year I can tour Europe. There are so many amazing places I'd love to play - Germany, France, Spain, Holland, Sweden... and of course Italy! So hopefully it won't be too long before I can pay you guys a visit ;-)

Lee Interview With 'Buffalo Rocks'

Hey Lee. We are really looking forward to having you play Buffalo Rocks on the 23rd September at The Monarch – are you excited about playing alongside James Walsh?
Definitely. He was on my music radar as a kid growing up and my friends and I followed his band, and so to share a stage with James is going to be a really nice feeling.

Were you a big Starsailor Fan?
I really dug the fact that they got Phil Spector involved, I thought that was really cool. Silence is Easy was probably my fave song of theirs and I thought the “Wall of Sound” production was great. They definitely stood out from a lot of other indie bands at the time because of that. And I thought Alcoholic was a bold song too.

Who are your main influences?
John & Paul, The King, Rod the Mod, Carl & Pete, Kurt Cobain, Liam & Noel..

What are your plans for the next six months?
Lots of gigs! Preparing for a 3 month tour of the US just after Christmas…. And also putting out an EP that I’m currently recording with Stereophonics producer Jim Lowe.

Live Review From 'The Ark London'

The Old Queen’s Head

11/07/10

The weather’s warm, there’s a slight breeze and the pubs in Islington are full. There’s one in particular, however, that’s more interesting than all the others – The Old Queen’s Head is a ten minute walk from Angel Underground Station. The tables and chairs are set up outside and the aircon’s on full blast inside.
After ordering a well-deserved drink I ascend the rather eerie set of stairs to the gig room. A mirror hangs halfway up the staircase, the words “The Looking Glass” decorate it along with an illustration of The Mad Hatter. The room the stairs lead to is just as Carrol-esque, huge chandeliers hang from the ceilings, bizarre paintings decorate the faux-vintage walls and the bar staff are far from introverted.
But tonight is a night of music, not literature – although with the lyrical talent possessed by Lee MacDougall it’s often hard to differentiate. As one set finishes another one must begin and the dreadlocked singer on before Lee (his name escapes me) accepts the round of applause and exists stage right. Lee takes his place; guitar in hand and joined by rhythm guitarist Rob Getaway. They’re introduced by the enthusiastic bar staff and the set begins, kicking off with the unrequited love song How To Be, the crowd is small, but they’re definitely interested.

Lee’s second track for the evening, a fan favourite – Falling In Love For The Last Time receives greater praise – the crowd are getting hooked and Lee’s confidence is starting to crack through, particularly in his vocals. But it’s with Joanna, the third track of the evening that really hooks the audience – a sincere and powerfully written song made even more powerful by Lee’s expressive and commanding vocals.

Interview With 'The Ark London'

Lee MacDougall was born and raised in a small seaport town, soon to be distracted by the bright lights and culture of the UK’s capital, he decided to move here. His songs, as he’s more than happy to tell you, could be better described as short stories set to music. You can’t help but be reminded of the sixties’ kitchen sink drama films and books, his songs reflect the lives of everyday people in a brilliantly poetic way. And, like the devious little creatures we are, we managed to get a few more words out of him.

First off, tell me a bit about yourself – how would you describe your music?
I grew up in Grimsby which is a small town in the north of England and I moved down to London a few years ago after I managed to escape one day on the Megabus. People are big on humour and sarcasm in the north, so I guess there’s a bit of that in my songs, and they’re very honest and mostly based on true stories. My album will almost be a diary of a kid leaving home and moving to the big city with 50p in his pocket telling tales about the adventures he had along the way. Musically I think I’m somewhere in between Rod Stewart, The Kinks and The Kooks.
How did you get into music, was there a particular band or art

ist who made you think “that’s it, that’s what I want to do” ?
The turning point that took me from musical spectator to actual musician was when Kurt Cobain died. Nirvana suddenly became massive and all my friends went mad for them. I thought he was so cool. I went out and bought a cheap imitation Fender Strat and spent hours in my room endlessly playing the riff to Come As You Are. When he died it left a bit of a hole in music and suddenly there were lots of kids left in flannel shirts and eyeliner wandering around town looking lost.
Then someone gave me a tape of a new band called Oasis and the minute Live Forever came on, it blew my head off. I genuinely thought it was the single greatest thing I’d ever heard. And they were just a bunch of lads from Manchester. I thought “I could do that…”

Lee Interview With 'Dreaming Of Edward' Blog

Dreaming of Edward’s blog interview with musician Lee MacDougall
By Kiva Johns-Adkins

For me, Twilight and Robert Pattinson have introduced me to a whole world of music I might not have ever listened to. I now find myself searching for the Indie musicians and the up and comers. I developed a friendship with Australian musician Lee Safar, who was considered for the New Moon soundtrack. Now her career is sky-rocketing. I went to my first concert since high school, when I went to see Kings of Leon last year. Since then I have gone to see Bobby Long and this weekend, Sam Bradley. And in the midst of all of this discovery another musician with ties to Robert Pattinson hit my radar – British musician Lee MacDougall.

Lee took the time to speak to me over the phone from his parent’s place in Grimsby, England where he was visiting for the weekend. What a sweetie for giving us that kind of time.

MacDougall has just released a new song, ‘How to Be’, which he had originally written for the film by the same name, starring Rob. Because of the typical red tape associated with production companies the song didn’t make it on the soundtrack and Lee got to keep it for himself. In the first video he talks about ‘How To Be’ and how he went about writing it after talking to Rob about his character of Art. But how, you might ask, did MacDougall meet Rob in the first place-

“Rob is really great. I met him through his sister, Lizzie. I have been really good friends with her for quite a while. I really expect her (Lizzie) to do amazing things.”

(In case you didn’t know, Lizzie Pattinson is also a musician.)

Lee Wants Your Input!

Hey guys

I am now finalizing the dates and venues for my US/Canadian tour starting in NYC early next year. The dates will be announced very soon, but at the moment there are a few gaps in the calendar I want to fill, and I want to see as many of your lovely faces as possible... So-
If possible, I'd like to do a definitive round up of all of your suggestions of major cities near you that you would like to see me do a show...
I know lots of you have already suggested places, so sorry if I am repeating myself, I've been keeping track of all them as best I can but thought it would be great to do one last round up to make sure that I don't miss anyone and to make sure that I can come to a town near you!

So if you could reply to this blog with your nearest major city that you would like to see me play between Feb and April next year, that would be perfect.

Also, I will be available for private bookings and house gigs and stuff whilst I'm over there, so if you would like some of that action then please contact my manager Phil directly at phil@upallnightmusic.com

Can't wait to see you all next year guys! It's gonna be amazing. Thanks for helping me put this together,

Big love

Moonlight Sessions: 'Creep' Vid With Lyrics

Creep by Radiohead

When you were here before,
Couldn't look you in the eye
You're just like an angel,
Your skin makes me cry

You float like a feather
In a beautiful world
I wish I was special
You're so fuckin' special

But I'm a creep,
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here

I don't care if it hurts,
I wanna have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul

I want you to notice
when I'm not around
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here, ohhhh, ohhhh

She's running out again
She's running out
She run run run run...
run... run...

Whatever makes you happy
Whatever you want
You're so fuckin' special
I wish I was special

But I'm a creep,
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here

I don't belong here...
